I would like to congratulate Gianfranco Cresciani who was awarded the Bathurst Macquarie Heritage Medal for 2018 on Saturday night.
Dr Cresciani was one of four finalists in contention for the medal, and he has been honoured for his work in the protection, understanding and promotion of Australia’s Italo-Australian heritage.
Gianfranco Cresciani has researched, collected, archived, written, published and broadcast the history of Italian migration to Australia since 1970 to the present. He has published and edited ten books, over thirty scholarly papers and spoken at dozens of international conferences on Italian migration to Australia.
Two local projects were honoured as joint winners of The Chifley Award, the restoration of the Clifton Convict Quarters and the restoration of 13 Morrisset Street.
The Chifley Award is presented as part of the Bathurst Region Heritage Awards, to a project that demonstrates the most outstanding contribution to the built, natural or cultural heritage of the Bathurst region.
The night was an occasion to thank Barbara Hickson for her contribution as Council’s Heritage Advisor. Barbara, who will finish at the end of this year, has spent 22 years in the role. This makes her one of the longest continuous serving heritage advisors to a single council in NSW, and our city has benefitted greatly from her contribution.
Living Legends
I would also like to congratulate the seven Living Legends that were announced on Sunday as part of Proclamation Day celebrations.
Living Legends contribute to the wellbeing of Bathurst, benefitting the entire community and generating goodwill. Terisa Ashworth, Clifford Berry, Margaret Hargans, Ronald Hollebone, Tony Lewis, Brian Mowbray and Ian Ramsay OAM will join the 216 other names in the Living Legend Avenue on Bradwardine Road.

Grandparents Day Funding
I am encouraging local organisations to take advantage of the NSW Government’s 2018 Grandparents Day event grants, to show grandparents and seniors just how valuable they are to the community. A share of $200,000 is available for organisations across NSW to host events that engage seniors of all ages and abilities.
The events can be held on or around Grandparents Day, to be celebrated Sunday, October 28 this year. Grandparents are true stars in our community, devoting their time to supporting their families and friends near and far. Applications for the 2018 NSW Grandparents Day event grants program are open until midday on Friday, June 15. Visit www.grandparentsday.nsw.gov.au/grants.
Reducing Homelessness
With an investment of up to $10 million statewide, the NSW Government is inviting non-government organisations to develop innovative supported temporary accommodation models with the goal of reducing homelessness across NSW. The third and final stage of an Expression of Interest opened this week, and under the EOI, up to $10 million will be re-directed from low cost motels and made available to non-government organisations to provide supported temporary accommodation.
The NSW Government provided more than 24,800 clients state-wide with access to temporary accommodation. Anyone at risk of or experiencing homelessness should call Link2home on 1800 152 152.
