Shoobee Doo ($2 favourite) took out the annual two-year-old colts and geldings feature by leading start to finish, coming home in a career best mile rate of 1:54.9.
With Bernie Hewitt’s Gold Crown winner College Chapel scratched Turnbull took full advantage and delivered her Shoobees Place colt a fourth career win.
“I was over the moon. He’s racing manners have been a bit mixed. He gets a bit funny behind the mobile sometimes but he had a really good night,” Turnbull said.
“He had one race where he broke and that cost him a place in the Gold Crown. He’s always showed us something, he’s just needed a bit of luck.
“He was really relaxed through this race. When the other horse came up to the death seat that spooked him a bit but going for home he was really good.”
When the gates folded back Shoobee Doo got out well but was challenged for the lead by Nathan Jack’s Animal – the colt Turnbull drove to third place in the Gold Crown final.
Shoobee Doo surged ahead on the turn to take control of the race.
Animal took the sit behind Turnbull’s leader and Its All Business worked hard to find the death seat midway through the run.
Its All Business went a half length clear of the leader before Shoobee Doo knuckled down to draw level on the turn.
Shoobee Doo threw down the challenge at the top of the straight and several runners managed to go with him.
Animal was close by on the inside while Dee Double You and Petes Big Jim pulled out wide to make their runs.
Shoobee Doo wasn’t going to be caught, running out a 27.6 for the final quarter to win by 6m over Animal ($5.60).
Dee Double You ($31.60) flashed home for third.
Meanwhile, Bathurst trainers and drivers enjoyed a superb run of results at Dubbo’s Friday night meeting.
One of the standout results of the night was Steve Turnbull’s Atomic Red ($1.10 favourite) winning the $20,000 Quamby’s Stayers Dubbo Regional Council City Cup (2,525m).
Atomic Red belted the field aside from one contender – Michael Formosa’s Ultimate Art.
Turnbull’s horse held out Ultimate Art in the duel. There was almost 60 metres back to the third placed runner.
Atomic Red set a new record mile rate of 1:56.9, smashing the previous record of 1:59.2 held by another of Turnbull’s champion horses, My Dusky Sound.
