With bushfire danger period now over for another year, NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) firefighters are taking advantage of cooler weather to conduct burn-offs.

NSW RFS Chifley/Lithgow Team operational officer Brett Taylor said the largest of the three burns will be conducted near the Marrangaroo Army base near Lithgow.

It was here that an army training exercise in October 2013 inadvertently caused a massive fire in the Blue Mountains that ripped through more than 47,000 hectares of bushland.

Mr Taylor said the 220 hectare hazard reduction burn would commence on Saturday.

“This will consist of prescribed burning of vegetation to reduce the bushfire fuel and assist in reducing the intensity and adverse impact of bushfires in extreme weather conditions,” he said. “It’s all about reducing the fuel loads around strategic assets.”

Mr Taylor said two other burns will also commence on Saturday, the first is a 68ha burn near Burraga Dam, also known as Thompson’s Creek Dam.

The other is a 16ha hazard reduction off Jeremy Road at Jeremy, south-east of Burraga.

“It’s been 20 years since Burraga Dam and Jeremy were burnt,” Mr Taylor said.

As the prescribed burns will generate smoke, hot embers and heat, he said it was important to consider keeping doors and windows closed to prevent smoke entering homes.

“If you have asthma or a lung condition, reduce outdoor activities,” Mr Taylor said.

All burns are subject to weather conditions.
