Pat’s were on the verge of a stunning comeback victory at Sid Kallas Oval, but Gordon’s one-pointer in the 75th minute put the Magpies up 21-20 and sealed the swoopers’ fourth win of the season.
It was all Cowra early as the Magpies fired to an early 16-0 lead, Ronald Lawrence, Bradyn Cassidy and Gordon all grabbing first half tries.
Momentum shifted at the break after St Pat’s Sam Dwyer scored with the final play of the half.
The visitors lifted and leveled the scores at 16-16 through tries to captain Nick Millar and Caleb Wardman before Michael Latu went in to give Pat’s a 20-16 lead.
The Magpies locked it up at 20-20 responding through a try to Lee McClintock with nine minutes remaining, then up stepped Gordon.
The Magpies fullback knocked over a field goal with five minutes on the clock and Cowra were able to hang on to notch their third win in a row.
The two best props in the Group were out there today in Blake Tidswell and Zac Merritt.
- Steve Sutton
Magpies coach Steve Sutton was pleased to get over the line and praised the work of prop Blake Tidswell.
“I thought we were clinical in that first half an hour but they worked their way back into it like any good team. We had to stick with them and we did that.
“Blake Tidswell was outstanding. The two best props in the Group were out there today in Blake Tidswell and Zac Merritt. They were both outstanding.
“He actually set us up for the field goal. It was still nail biting for the final few minutes but were good enough.”
