The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests are undergoing a three-year transition period to move them online rather than pen and paper.

Of the 3500 schools across NSW around 550 are sitting all NAPLAN tests online for the first time this year, and in Bathurst the only other school doing NAPLAN online is Meadow Flat Public School.

Kelso High relieving principal Narelle Small said the online tests had gone off without a hitch.

“It’s going very well, it’s been running very smoothly,” she said.

“The time and effort put into the tests has meant it’s running really well.”

Kelso High has 240 students in Year 7 and 9, and the four NAPLAN test have been undertaken in batches of 58 students rotating through the two computer rooms.

“The implementation of the online test has been a well planned process and it has involved the commitment of students and staff,” Ms Small said.

NAPLAN’s move to online was not unexpected for the school’s teaching staff and students and she said it suits today’s modern students.

“It’s moving with the times and making NAPLAN more relevant as one of the diagnostic tools we use,” she said.

NAPLAN is held every second year across Australia and it puts students in years three, five, seven and nine to the test in: reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.
