Bathurst Observatory, with the support of Abercrombie House and Charles Sturt University, had 100 people attend the event, where they looked a the moon and stars.
The event was registered as part of the joint effort between ABC and Australian National University to set a new record for the most people stargazing at the night sky across multiple locations.
The record stood at 7960 people across 37 locations and, while the exact figure is still being determined, over 40,000 people stargazed from more than 285 locations.
All registered participants will receive a certificate from Guinness World Records to recognise their participation.
