Mr O’Leary will be one of eight students from the Central West to tackle the country’s largest vocational education and excellence competition, with the aim to win gold and earn a place on the Australian Skillaroos team to compete at the WorldSkills international finals in Russia in 2020.
“I’m looking forward to going to Sydney – it’s a chance to do something a bit different and show off your skills,” the Packaging Professionals employee said.
“I’ve really enjoyed the WorldSkills experience so far. It’s great to learn new skills and it would be pretty good if I was lucky enough to get to Australia – competing on the other side of the world would be unreal.”
TAFE NSW Bathurst Electrical teacher and WorldSkills site crew member Matthew Ware said Tom and his local teammates were well prepared for the competition and he expected them to all perform well.
“These eight extremely skillful TAFE NSW Orange, Bathurst and Dubbo students have earnt the right to compete at the state level after upstaging the best local talent at the regional WorldSkills competition in the Central West,” he said.
“Having worked closely with Tom and the team, I’m confident the local competitors not only have the skills to do well in Sydney, but go on to achieve success at the international finals in Russia.”
