It wasn’t about his stagecraft or selection of songs or voice projection; it was about the name of the city.
“My first recollection of performing in Bathurst I was schooled quite aggressively in the correct pronunciation of Bathurst,” Sebastian said as he prepares to return to the city for a performance next week.
“I might have been putting a bit too much emphasis on the 'R', but was informed it's actually more like Bath-hust.
“Whenever I'm jumping on stage in Bathurst, I'm very grateful and have never forgotten.”
Sebastian’s Then And Now regional tour, which began on June 9, is already off to a solid start.
Shows at Wollongong, Wagga Wagga, Griffith, Taree and Port Macquarie have all sold out and the tour promoters are confident they won’t be the only ones.
Sebastian, who was last in Bathurst for a sold-out performance in February 2016, will bring his new tour to the Bathurst Memorial Entertainment Centre next Wednesday, June 27.
The former Australian Idol winner says he’s no Bathurst expert – despite his expertise in pronouncing the city name – but he does know it’s a great place to take a photo or two.
I was schooled quite aggressively in the correct pronunciation of Bathurst.
“I can't claim to know an awful lot about the area, but last time I was travelling through I took some amazing photos of the beautiful countryside around the town and in particular an awesome sunset,” he said.
“I hope to get out to take a few more on this trip.”
Sebastian isn’t a big car-racing fan, but is a motorcycle enthusiast who enjoys collecting vintage bikes.
He would like to do a spin around Mount Panorama with one of the bikes, but says it’s not practical.
“If I could take one of them on the road with me, I'd be tearing up that circuit for sure,” he said.
Sebastian’s tour will feature songs from his current album, Conscious, such as Bloodstone and Set In Stone, alongside songs which have shaped his long career.
Supporting him on the tour will be Aussie-born, Chicago-based singer Fatai, who sang with Sebastian on his song Lightning.
