THE Mitre and Lambert streets roundabout saga looks like it will come to a pragmatic end soon with Bathurst Regional Council this week being asked to approve a design layout to be placed on public display for comment.

On face value, the proposed design is a win for all. In fact, pedestrian safety looks like it will be improved despite the removal of two pedestrian crossings, to be replaced with five pedestrian refuges.
The creation of additional parking at the tennis complex will also be a benefit to the local community.
I suspect council will be asked in future submissions to place blister islands and a pedestrian refuge on Esrom Street to finish off the precinct upgrade completely.
Easy to tick the box, but much harder to listen
COUNCIL’S budget – or, as the spin doctors now call it, the 2017-2021 Delivery Plan and Operational Plan 2017-2018 - will be placed on public display from Wednesday.
Amusingly, as part of the imaginary transparency process, council asks for submissions on that plan.
To date, I can’t recall any submissions ever being accepted, but council gets to “tick the box” that ratepayers had an opportunity to make submissions.
Is the finish line getting close for track design?
COUNCIL is being very tight-lipped over the tenders for the proposed second circuit on Mount Panorama.
Three design submissions have been received and a decision is expected on the successful tenderer in July.
Curiously, I hear that one tenderer has engaged a former staff member from Bathurst Regional Council as a consultant.
Members of the Second Circuit Action Group find that very interesting, to say the least.
Watch this airport space as lease concerns grow
I MENTIONED a few months ago that trouble was brewing at the aerodrome, with tenants up in arms over hangar leasing terms.
What’s the quote? Locked and loaded, it’s ready to explode.
We need a road map for better CBD traffic flow
A LOT has been said recently about traffic within Bathurst.
Should it be nose-in parking; should the CBD all be line marked?
One thing that is certain, as I’ve stated before, is a forum of users should be held to hear input and direction on how traffic flow could be improved before it’s too late.
For reasons unknown, however, council has been very reticent to schedule any such forum.
Maybe the Bathurst Business Chamber needs to show some initiative to force the issue, convening a forum and inviting council to come along.
Thumbs up
A PRAGMATIC proposed design for a roundabout at the intersection of Mitre and Lambert streets. A win for all except Cr Warren Aubin, I suspect.
Thumbs down
BITTERLY cold weather accompanied by low levels of rainfall. We’ll substitute the wind for rain any day.
