It’s about the only way to describe Bathurst’s opening day of the Astley Cup, the hosts set to take a 261 to 139 lead into day two after crushing wins in the tennis and boys’ basketball and then a dominant performance across track and field in the athletics on Thursday.
Bathurst High School Astley Cup coordinator Lachlan Blaikie said day one went to plan.

“The athletics is always pretty tight, but we’re looking good. We’ve got some great athletes,” he said with the school wrapping up a 70-30 split in the athletics.
Although Dubbo is set to revise that on the morning of day two.
It’s a good starter for next week against Orange.

“We were confident in the tennis team. The netball girls did well, they lost but kept it competitive. It’s a good starter for next week against Orange,” Blaikie added.
“A loss isn’t a bad thing if you keep it tight. We’ve done well.”
All strong teams on Friday, which Blaikie said

DAY TWO
It’s impossible to look at the program of the second day of the opening tie in Bathurst and not be excited about the rugby league.
Dubbo College and Bathurst High will go head-to-head at Carrington Park on Friday afternoon from 2pm in what is shaping up as one of the best battles the cup has seen in the last decade.
The hosts boast highly regarded pair Brad Fearnley and Noah Griffiths while the visiting Dubbo College’s strength is undeniably its rugby league team, however, it’s hard to see the league boys pegging back enough points on the rampant hosts after a strong day one of the 2018 Astley Cup in Bathurst.
The boy’s soccer, too, is shaping up as a big game with the match to double as the western region final at Proctor Park from 11.30am.
Day two kicks off at the Cooke Hockey Complex.
DAY TWO PROGRAM
- 9.30am – Girls’ hockey at Cooke Hockey Complex.
- 11.30am – Boys’ soccer at Proctor Park.
- 12.45pm – Girls’ soccer at Proctor Park.
