As the defending champions Bathurst High were determined to come out of the blocks firing and send a message to their next challengers Orange High School.
Safe to say they’ve done that.
Bathurst won five of the eight sports on offer to claim a 487 to 313 victory over Dubbo and cap off a great performance on home turf.
Convincing wins in the tennis and girls football made the biggest impact for the hosts and accounted for a 163-37 contribution in Bathurst’s favour.
Bathurst were also too strong in the basketball, athletics and hockey.
Dubbo did get an exciting consolation prize when a late try on Friday afternoon delivered them a 26-24 win in the rugby league at Carrington Park.
The margin betters the effort Bathurst produced in last year’s corresponding tie. On that occasion BHS regained the cup with a 479-321 result.
Orange hosts Bathurst next week. A win by Bathurst will secure the 2018 Astley Cup.
