KerryAnn Turner’s gelding CC Jones ($9.80) scored the upset win over Amanda Turnbull’s Aintnobettor ($1.40 favourite) by 2.1m.
Outside of Karloo Bentwofifty, who broke at the race’s start, the remainder of the field all finished within 5.3m of each other.
Turner’s Christian Cullen gelding started his new preparation off in encouraging style, bouncing back from his last place finish in March where he broke.
CC Jones’ race manners are still being refined but Turner was happy to come away with the win.
“He’s gradually getting there but he still needs to improve a bit,” she said.
“I do like the Christian Cullens but sometimes they do have a bit of a temperament but when you work them out they tend to be nice horses.”
The small field of six runners became spread out across the early stages of Wednesday’s race.
Karloo Bentwofifty’s break in stride dropped him back to the rear of the field while Cobbler Lane and Aintnobettor battled for the early lead.
Cobbler Lane took control. Aintnobettor almost broke but kept momentum going to sit in the death.
Smiling Sam sat behind the leader and CC Jones drew alongside him when the field received the bell.
The field of six stayed tightly packed together until the bend for home.
Karloo Bentwofifty dropped out of the running when his early exertions to latch onto the field caught up with him.
Out in front Cobbler Lane and Aintnobettor were joined by CC Jones whose three-wide move created a line of horses at the top of the straight.
Smiling Sam ducked to the sprint lane and outsider Dinosaurus Rex showed some late fight to make it a five-horse battle to the post.
CC Jones poked ahead of the bunch at the 100m mark and stayed ahead to win in a mile rate of 1:56.6.
Smiling Sam ($12.90, Chris Geary) won the fight for third.
It’s the second win for CC Jones following a victory on debut.
