France defeated Croatia 4-2 in the FIFA World Cup final, lifting the trophy for the first time since 1998.
The win has brought plenty of joy to several Bathurst residents, including France natives Antoine Bourven and Alexis Le Masson.
Both Mr Bourven and Mr Le Masson, who met at school in the French commune of Chevreuse, were up to 4am on Monday morning, watching and celebrating France’s victory.
“It was a great game for it to finish 4-2. For a final, you don’t see that many goals,” Mr Le Masson said.
“We had friends and family texting us and it’s a bit sad we aren’t there to celebrate with them.
“France played great the whole tournament. They were united and the coach made the right choices with who he selected to be in the team.”
He said the tournament has brought the entire French community, who may not normally watch football, together.
“People are out on the streets celebrating and partying and the Champs-Élysées hasn’t been this packed out since the 1998 World Cup win and after the end of both World Wars.”
