Police and paramedics were called to the Lloyds Road level crossing about 11am following reports a pedestrian had been hit on the tracks.
The man died instantly. Police have not been able to determine his age but say it was not a child.
Officers have interviewed witnesses who were parked at the level crossing, just off the Vale Road, waiting for the train to pass at the time of the incident.
A report into the circumstances surrounding the man’s death will be prepared for the coroner.
Lloyds Road remains closed to traffic near the scene of the fatality and buses have been called in to take XPT passengers on the rest of their journey to Orange and Dubbo.
Vale Road has remained open throughout the incident.
Crash investigators remain on the scene and XPT remains stationary on the tracks just 100 metres from the incident.
