Emergency services were called to the scene near Bakers Swamp, about 25 kilometres south of Wellington at about 9.20am after reports a Toyota Camry sedan and a Toyota land cruiser towing a caravan were involved in a head-on collision. 

The 73-year-old male driver and sole occupant of the sedan was trapped in the vehicle and shortly after being released, it is believed he has suffered a heart attack and died at the scene. 

The male driver of the landcruiser and his two passengers were treated for minor injuries at the scene by NSW Ambulance officers. 

Officers from Orana Mid-Western Police District are investigating the cause of the crash and will prepare a report for the coroner. 

Traffic was affected and under counter-flow conditions until about 3.15pm when the crash site was cleared, and the south-bound lane was reopened.

The incident was the seventh fatality on NSW roads in the 48 hour period between Tuesday and Thursday. 

It has prompted a road-safety warning from Assistant Comissioner Michael Corboy and Orana Mid-Western Police District Inspector Dan Skelly. 

“The unfortunate death of the man this morning brings the total number of persons to have lost their lives on NSW Roads in the last 48 hours to seven,” Mr Skelly said.  

“We appeal to road users everywhere to be patient, don't take risks, don't speed, and don't use your mobile phone whilst driving. The biggest killers on our roads is speed and distraction.”

Traffic and Highway Patrol Command assistant commissioner Michael Corboy said the loss of seven lives in 48 hours must serve as a reminder for people to take personal responsibility for their actions.

“Seven more lives lost means that we have now lost 199 lives on our roads in 198 days this year.”
