July ends with the National Theatre Live screening of Macbeth on Sunday, July 29 from the Olivier Theatre in London. This apocalyptic re-imagining of the Scottish play stars Rory Kinnear and Anne-Marie Duff as the Macbeths.
Gracing the stage again in Bathurst this year is Sydney Dance Company on August 1 with their new work ab [intra] by Rafael Bonachela. Bonachela is the choreographer of 2 One Another, and Lux Tenebris, both of which have toured to Bathurst in recent years, wowing local audiences.
Ab intra is a Latin expression meaning “from within”. On stage the dancers explore the depth of human impulse and the extremes of human nature. Described as “stark and stunning” by Artshub the work opened earlier this year in Sydney to rave reviews.
One of Australia’s most iconic musicians, Ian Moss, brings his show Solo, Acoustic and Intimate to Bathurst on Friday, August 10. Spend the evening with the former Cold Chisel guitarist as he delivers an unforgettable sound, built around songs from his five acclaimed studio albums as well as this year’s self-titled release.
On August 16 Opera Australia will be performing Puccini’s Madame Butterfly. The iconic opera is a love story that reaches across cultures, across oceans and across time. It follows the story of romance and marriage between a US naval officer and a Japanese geisha and what happens when he must return home to the States.
John Bell, one of Australia’s most respected theatrical minds, has directed this English-language production overflowing with beautiful costumes, scenery and of course music. Hear Opera Australia’s wonderful singers perform with a chamber orchestra, along with Bathurst’s own Mitchell Young Voices.
The Monthly Band Night on August 17 will feature Señor Cabrales. Hailing from Northern Spain and Australia, they are one of Australia’s most accomplished and respected traditional music ensembles. Their unique sound features Spanish bagpipes, fiddles, flute, mandolin, bouzouki, bodhran and more.
Shows to round out the season for the rest of the year include Julius Caesar by Bell Shakespeare (September 27); L-FRESH the LION with the Mitchell Chamber Orchestra (October 19); A Ragtime Piano Party (October 24-25); The Climbing Tree (November 2-6); and Bright Star (November 9).
