It’s fair to say Aspire Gymnastics 2795 was at the top of its game during the recent Country Championships at Newcastle.
Emma Jones (level five) and Aimee Nicholls (level six) are counting down to a State Championships appearance on August 25 thanks to their great all-round performances.
Jones scored 6.2 on the beam to finish sixth overall and Nicholls was fourth overall on vault with a score of 9.1.
Aspire’s level four team of Roxy George, Shayla Winwood-Smith, Sophie Dunbar, Alicia Nobles and Eve Twohill collectively finished with nine results of 9.0 or higher.
Winwood-Smith, Dunbar and Twohill all received gold banding and the quintet were fourth out of 42 in the teams standings.
Aspire coach Sophie Godleman said the event was one to remember for her team.
“The highlights were our level four team having a fourth placing, two kids qualifying in different levels for state and in tumbling we did well for our first experience doing it,” she said.
“We took 23 gymnasts away, which is probably the most we’ve taken to a massive, five-day event.”
Godleman was especially excited about her tumbling team’s achievement.
Ranging from tumbling levels one to four, the team not only locked out the podium but had a big presence inside the top 10.
“In level one Layla Liston was first, Sam Woolfe came second, Chontelle Burgess was third, Mia Rodenhuis was fourth, Ally Evans was sixth and Ella Lansom was seventh. We took out all the placings except fifth,” Godleman said.
“Seeing that many of our gymnasts up on the podium at that same time made me think ‘Oh my goodness’. It was very exciting.
“In level two Ebony Pender was equal first with a member from another club and for level four Aimee Nicholls was fourth. Across the board we had a lot of placings over different levels.”
Heidi Twohill, Abby Hall, Ebony Pender and Michaela Doungamnee all qualified for the State Challenge, which is coming up quickly on August 4.
Doungamnee was the Bathurst team’s sole level seven representative and was back in the team after over a year away from competition.
She was first on bars, second on vault and finished fifth overall.
“It’s a very good effort, her floor and beam were also excellent. There was just point one or two of a mark between placings,” Godleman said.
