Many horses will be partaking in extra hay, treats such as apples and carrots or even a brand new rug, yet many people don’t actually understand why the horses birthday is celebrated annually on August 1.
Across the globe there are two days used to dictate a horses birthday. In the southern hemisphere it is August 1, in the northern hemisphere it is January 1.
The obvious difference between the dates is the natural breeding season for horses. In Australia mares are usually covered and impregnated in September, and then go on to foal in August.

The other reason that horses needed a standardised birth date is for the racing industry.
The date, based on each hemispheres breeding season, is used to regulate the industry, which uses the date to put horses in the correct age brackets and grades for races.
It is similar to the method used for children when enrolling them in school to ensure growth, development and skills are at a competitive and similar level.
