Utter joy.
That was the feeling more than 300 skaters with disabilities experienced when they took to the ice during Bathurst Regional Council’s recent Winter Festival. It was also the feeling which warmed the hearts of parents and carers, disability providers and council staff as they watched skaters, young and old, relish the opportunity to participate in an activity so different from their day-to-day routine.
“There is a large percentage of our small community who are people living with a disability which inhibits their ability to access these fun, large events,” LiveBetter’s community access manager Michelle Stark said.

“These types of days really empower them to become valued members of the community. Because everyone, no matter who you are, deserves the right to be treated equally and part of that is being able to enjoy life and take part in things anyone can do.”
LiveBetter partnered with Bathurst Regional Council again this year to organise the day on the ice for those with disability and the community service organisation was thrilled with the positive response.
“It was utter joy,” Ms Stark said of the day. “It was something so different to what a lot of these guys get the chance to do each day of their lives. And parents said if we didn't run a day like this, they wouldn’t – on their own – be able to bring their children to participate in the festival.”
