The idea to fundraise came from members of the jail’s staff social club who said they “wanted to do something to help.”
Last week they started an Everyday Hero fundraising page, which has already raised over $5,000, with donations coming not only from staff at Bathurst Jail, but other jails across the state.
Secretary of the Bathurst Jail social club, Kristy Donlan, said initially the goal was to raise $2750 for the hay, now they are aiming for $5,500 which will also pay transport costs.
Ms Donlan said the response has been amazing, and the social club had sent a challenge out to other jails across the state to try and match their efforts.
Wil Koro, who is part of the effort said challenges had been sent to Wellington, Goulburn, Lithgow and Kirkconnell correctional centres.
Mr Koro, who is also trained in mental health and suicide prevention, reminded farmers support is available.
“If you’re struggling help is available, contact Lifeline [13 11 14] if you need to talk.”
