Rosemary Morrow and Lis Bastian, who will be leading the permaculture design course at Rahamim Ecology Centre, say it will be a rare opportunity to learn the growing system without having to travel interstate.
Ms Morrow and Ms Bastian are two of the country’s leading teachers of permaculture, which was developed over 40 years ago by two Australians, Bill Mollison and David Holmgren, with the aim of learning from nature and traditional societies to create more resilient landscapes and communities.
The permaculture design course at Rahamim has been designed to be accessible to those who are working, or who have commitments during the week.
It will start this Friday, August 10 and will be held on Friday nights and Saturdays until September 29.
Ms Morrow, who received the Advance Global Australian Award last year for services to agriculture, is internationally recognised for her work in challenging environments - including, most recently, teaching refugees in war-torn Kurdistan.
She is the author of the Earth User’s Guide To Permaculture, an introduction to practical permaculture that contains advice about measuring, monitoring and reducing people’s ecological footprints.
Ms Bastian, known to many for her work at Arts Out West and as a climate adaptation officer for Centroc, also runs The Big Fix – a not-for-profit organisation which focuses on developing solutions to complex social and environmental problems and sharing the stories of what people in every sector are doing to solve these problems.
She was recently nominated as permaculturist of the year.
Through a combination of theory, hands-on practice and site visits, Ms Morrow and Ms Bastian say the course will teach participants how to approach both their land and their communities as part of much larger systems and to design strategies to grow healthier food, regenerate landscapes and reduce living costs.
