In freezing conditions, our veterans, joined by their families and the community were honoured at the annual Vietnam Veterans Memorial Service, held at the Vietnam Veterans Park.

The service began with a parade, accompanied by the Canobolas Highland Pipe Band, with the salute taken by Acting Superintendent  of Chifley Police District Glenn Cogdell. 

Madison Tasker sang ‘Only 19’ during the service.

Member for Bathurst Paul Toole, was guest speaker at the event, who spoke about the challenges faced by veterans not only while engaged in war, but also upon returning home to Australia, where sadly  they were not met  with open arms.

Mr Toole said the veterans “put their lives on the line for us.”

“It does not matter where people go to fight for our country, and they deserve to be looked after by us and acknowledged for their gallant and valiant efforts,” he said.

“For many years the Vietnam veterans fought for recognition. It is important for Australians to recognise their bravery, particularly as we keep talking about the Anzac spirit, which is in every single one of us, but especially those who put their lives on the line for the freedoms that we enjoy today."
