Tricia Allan is the founder and director of a new Bathurst business called Finesse Leadership Academy. Here, Ms Allan answers questions on this unique enterprise and what it offers.
What is Modern Manners and Life Skills?
“It is a practical three-day workshop for high school aged girls. We will look at how manners and self-awareness affect confidence, leadership potential and social success. Importantly, it will also be lots of fun and will have the benefit of expert presenters.

What kind of person would your workshop suit?
“Young women from all walks of life and with different needs: the socially anxious to the extrovert. It is for anyone who could benefit from getting a head start, preparing for adulting.
Is this one of those courses where girls walk around with books on their heads?
“No, but we do revisit some of those classic skills like fine dining, walking and speaking with confidence, along with assertiveness, workplace readiness and personal safety.
In 2018, is this program really necessary?
“Definitely. Social skills and self confidence can affect the first impression we make in significant situations like job interviews. These skills are in high demand from employers, although not taught, as the knowledge is assumed.
“Sharing this knowledge with young women will give them a solid foundation to claim their future success with finesse.

Why did you want to start a business like Finesse?
“I started Finesse because I wanted to do something a little different with my Psychology Degree (Education and Criminology majors).
“Working in a government department, in roles of Unit Leader, Mentor and Hiring Manager gives me useful credentials to help prepare young women.
“As a former NSW police officer, I was trained in self-defence and am passionate about equipping young women to be proactive in their personal safety.
“Finally, I searched for a local course in etiquette to encourage our then 'tween' to build her social skills and step out of her comfort zone: none! Sending her to Sydney was not an option, so I decided to design my own workshop which was less etiquette-based and more leadership-based.
Why offer 50 per cent off and lifetime membership?
“I want to spread the Finesse name. As a Bathurst local, the place to start is here. I love celebrations, so why not celebrate our launch by offering a bargain?
“Once you’ve graduated from a workshop, you can return to the same workshop for free as many times as you like (subject to availability).
“In Sydney, similar one-day workshops range from $150 to $980, and most don’t include any catering. Comparably, Finesse offers outstanding value: a three-day workshop, full five-star catering and a high tea graduation (where parents are invited).
Where is your workshop being held?
“The Bathurst course is at Rydges, Mount Panorama.
Are other workshops available through Finesse?
“We plan to offer an advanced one-day follow-up workshop, a workshop for young men (high school age), an Adult Professionals Workshop and we also deliver in school presentations.”
