On Monday morning, Member for Bathurst Paul Toole announced $435,000 from the Crown Reserve Improvement Fund will go towards restoring the historic Howard Pavilion at the Bathurst Showground.

Upgrades at the historic pavilion, which was built in 1879, will see new roofing, pole repairs or replacement, window repairs, internal bracing, improved drainage and any necessary electrical upgrades.

Mr Toole said the Crown Reserves Improvement Fund program was focused on ensuring communities and visitors could continue to enjoy local land and facilities.

“With such a great history in our local community, it’s important we do what we can to preserve these buildings for future generations.”

“This year we’ve made a record investment into Crown land, with more than $20 million in grants and loans being provided across the state.”

John McMahon, deputy chairman of land manager of Bathurst Showground, said the grant has been well received. 

“We’re very fortunate. It really needs some love and maintenance,” he said.

“It costs a lot of money to do work, so that’s why the money is so important for us.”

He said the Bathurst Showground has been an important host in many community events, such as the Central Tablelands Woodcraft, the Bathurst Farmers’ Markets and the Royal Bathurst Show. 

Secretary manager of the Bathurst Showground Christine Curry said the grant will enable the showground to uphold its strong historic aspects.

“They’re iconic buildings in the region,” she said.

“When you drive in, this is one of the first iconic buildings you see. It’s important to keep these buildings in the best condition we can.

“This is the first major funding we’ve had.”

Crown Reserve Improvement Fund supports Crown reserve managers by providing funding for repairs and maintenance projects, pest and weed control, new recreational infrastructure and environmental initiatives.
