Parade | Fifteen finals in a row is a record to envy

LAST week, Parade supplied some stats in the lead-up to the Group 10 premier league grand final between Bathurst Panthers and Cowra Magpies.

Now it’s the AFL Central West’s turn, as Bathurst Bushrangers Rebels host the Orange Tigers on Saturday in the senior men’s decider at George Park 2.

And we can’t forget the women, with Bathurst Giants taking on Dubbo Demons.

In senior men’s, the Bushrangers club has appeared in the past 14 consecutive grand finals, making Saturday’s decider the 15th grand final the club has made.

Surely that kind of record is unrivalled in any football code in the Central West.

In fact, that’s every year the club has existed, after the CSU Bulldogs and Bathurst Eagles amalgamated to form the Bushrangers in late 2003.

However, the Bushrangers have only won five of the 14 grand finals in which they’ve appeared and on Saturday they will play Orange Tigers in the decider for the fifth time in six seasons.

Yet Tigers have come out winners in three of the four previous deciders.

For the Bathurst Giants women’s side, it’s the first year the club has played in the women’s competition.

After Bushrangers finished top in relatively comfortable fashion, the minor premiers were bundled out of the competition in straight sets, to Dubbo and Giants respectively.

That makes it the first time Bushrangers will not win the premiership since the women’s competition was introduced in 2015.

So whatever happens in the women’s decider, there will be a first time premier crowned on Saturday.

Good luck to both Bathurst clubs that are competing for premiership success.
