Social Bowls
Great Bathurst weather encouraged four rinks of bowlers to Majellan this week for the Tuesday Afternoon Social Competition with Graham Couchman and Paul Francis taking the game and daily rink win with a 23-10 win over Noel Witney and Tim Pickstone.
Scores were even after the second and fifth ends, but a four for the Couchman team in the sixth end got them away and the Witney team couldn’t keep pace. By the tenth end, the Couchman team were in front 9-5 and with another four in the 11th, they were on a roll. The Witney team made it to double figures with a single shot in the final end.
Runners up in the daily rink prize were Glen Urza, Gus Thurgood and David Josh with a 24-17 win over Peter Naylor, Steve Callaghan and Nev Naylor with the Urza team jumping from the blocks with a two. A three and four in the fourth and fifth ends pushed the Urza team out to 9-2 and the Naylor team could only respond with single shots. A six in the 13th end for the Urza team put them at 19-8 and cruising with the Naylor team scoring a four in the 19th to give them a bit of relief.
Allan Clark, Robert McLean and Paul Kennedy scored a 20-19 win over Tony Hogan, Ray Minogue and Bob Bembrick with scores even after the 20th end. The Hogan team jumped early with a three and five from the blocks and they made double figures after six ends. A four in the seventh end for the Clark team got them to 10-8 behind, but the Hogan team responded to lead 14-10 after the 11th end. A five-end run from the 12th end for six shots put the Clark team ahead by two, but a four in the 17th put the Hogan team back in front and they were 19-16 after the 18th end. The final three ends went to the Clark team, giving them the match by one in the 21st end.
John Hobson, Jim Clark and John Bosson scored a 20-17 win over Ray Noonan, Terry Clark and Kevin Howard and they led for all but two ends. The Noonan team opened with a two, but the Hobson team responded with two ones and then a four and one to lead 8-5 after the seventh end. By the tenth they were 11-6 in front but a five for the Noonan team in the 11th evened the scores at 11-11 and again after the 13th when it was 12-12. From there it was all the Hobson team who scored in all but three ends to win going away.
Daily rink winners in the Saturday Afternoon Social Competition were Paul Francis, Tony Press and Ted Parker with a 31-19 win over Tiger Smith, Terry James and George Ballard.
The Smith team jumped early and were at 5-1 after the fourth when the Francis team scored a seven to commence a five-end run for 14 points to lead 15-5 after the ninth end. By the close of the 12th end it was square at 15-15, but the Francis team were not done yet and a six in the 17th gave them the break and a four in the 21st caped off the win.
Rhys Harvey, Gus Thurgood and Scott Chapman collected a 23-18 win over Allan Clark, Hugh Brennan and Paul Kennedy in a lead from the front performance opening with a four and two. The Clark team response put them one shot in front at 8-7 after the sixth end, but that was the last time they were in front despite getting close on two occasions. Finishing with a three in the last end the Harvey team won comfortably.
Glen Urza, Greg Cross and Trevor Sharpen won a see-sawing match 18-15 over John Hobson, Greg Cross and Max Elms with the lead changing four times in the match. Scores were even after the 15th end at 13-13 and the Urza team took the initiative from this point on scoring in all but two of the last six ends.
Peter Naylor and Ray Minogue scored a 21-16 win over Mick McDonald and Tim Pickstone, with the Naylor team taking the running up to the seventh end. From here, the McDonald team came back with a seven-end run for ten points and a lead of 13-8 after the 14th end. The Naylor team then exploded with a three, four, one and three to sit 19-13 after the 18th end. Despite a one two finish, the McDonald team couldn’t bridge the gap to go down by five at the post.
Club Championships
Tony McNamara and Merle Stevens took a 21-17 win over Tiger Smith and Sue Murray in a 2018 Mixed Pairs Championship match this week with the McNamara team leading from the third end and getting to 9-1 after the sixth end. By the tenth end the Smith team had recovered to trail 10-7, but it was 16-7 after the 14th end. The Smith team reached 16-15 by the 17th end but just couldn’t keep the momentum going and the McNamara team finished with two twos to seal the match.
Craig Bush and Mel Parker teamed up in another Mixed Pairs Championship match to defeat Ron and Leonie McGarry 34-15, despite the McGarry team jumping first from the blocks. A six to get the Bush team underway in the third end was an indication of things to come but scores were even at 8-8 after the sixth end. By the 13th end however, the Bush team led 25-9 and it was all but over. Another five in the 17th for the Bush team was icing on the cake and they won by 19 shots.
Tony McNamara, David Josh, Sue Murray and Merle Stevens scored a first-round win in the 2018 Mixed Fours Championships against Geoff Densmore, Diane Skinner, Kevin Howard and Betsey Thornberry. The Densmore team jumped first to lead 3-0 after the second end, but the McNamara team responded to have scores at 4-4 after the sixth end and then put the foot down to lead 12-4 before the Densmore team scored again with a three. A five in the 14th end put the McNamara team out to 20-8 and they scored on all but two of the final ends to win going away by 15 points.
That’s it for another week at Majellan readers so until next time.

An improvement in the weather brought more bowlers out and onto our bowling greens to enjoy some exercise and friendship with the following results.
Wednesday Jackpot, September 12, Social Bowls
Wednesday’s jackpot had 22 bowlers who contested one game of pairs and three games of triples.
Game 1: Ron Hollebone, Phil Murray and Paul Reece defeated John Allbutt, Graham Spurway and Jimmy Grives 26-12. The Grives team took the early lead 5-1 after five ends. Game 3: John Fulton and Ian Schofield 22 defeated Ian Cunningham and Ray (shorty) Noonan 15. Scoe’s team led 6-3 after six ends but Shorty and Ian fought back to lead 11-8 after twelve ends. Scoey won the ends 12-9 and had a +7 margin.
Game 4: Pat Duff, Kevin Miller and Jack Smith 26 defeated Bruce Rich, Ron Cambey and Dennis Oxley 18 and won the jackpot of $200 with a +eight margin at the same time. Friday, September 14, Social Bowls
Friday afternoon social bowls had two games of triples being contested.
Game 1: John Allbutt, Kevin Miller and John Archer 16 defeated Graham Spurway, Pat Duff and Neville Townsend 13. Maybe team Noonan was a bit nervous after conceding seven shots on the previous two ends before the game was called off? Shorty’s team won the ends 10-6. Welcome back to the winners list Shorty after a long absence!
Saturday Morning, September 15, Junior Development Squad
There was one game of triples played with our junior development bowlers when skip Brody, second Brendan and a new player who was lead for the morning Kane Cutler (welcome Kane) played against Bryce as Skip with Clara Bromfield as second and Karlie Butler as lead. Brody’s team got off to a great start and took an early lead over team Bryce but as the game progressed, the wind came up to make life a bit tricky on the green for these learner bowlers and made them realise how different conditions can change the way your bowl will travel.
It was good to see the improvement in all these young players. We hope to see more of you all again.
Meanwhile, Guy had some more coaching from one of our three accredited coaches Mick Sewell and his bowling skills has improved greatly and was reaching the jack on long ends.
The session starts at 10am, with about ten minutes rollup before the game and will then play around eight ends, finishing around 11:30am- 11:45am.
Saturday Afternoon, September 15, Social Bowls
Game 1: Geoffrey Thorne and Garry Hotham 20 defeated Bob Lindsay and John Archer 17. Team Hotham led 8-4 after seven ends but then team Archer kicked into gear and picked up a massive six shots on the fourteenth end to draw level 14-14. The scores were again level 16-16 after eighteen ends but Geoff and Garry held on for a good win with the ends telling the story when team Hotham won them 12-9.
Game 2: John Fulton and Ray Noonan 29 defeated Phillip Murray and Paul Reece 13. Team Reece led the game early 6-5 after seven ends but their joy was short lived as John and Shorty found their rhythm to lead 13-10 after fourteen ends and they then cruised home to win by 16 shots with the ends being 13-8 in John and Shorty’s way.
Game 3: Jim Grives and Dennis Harvey 26 defeated Ron Cambey and Mick Sewell 16. Ron and Mick took the early lead 5-1 after four ends but then Jim and Dennis went up a gear and led 16-12 after fourteen ends and 19-16 after eighteen ends with the Grives team winning the last three ends to record a comfortable win and won the ends 12-9.

Hans the Viking led his team to a 12-4 lead after seven ends and they never relinquished that lead and put their foot to the pedal and skipped away 20-10 after fourteen ends then led 26-14 after twenty ends when the game was called by Norm.
