Liam Morey, 16, visited Charles Sturt University’s School of Engineering last week to talk to local school students about his journey, pursing STEM subjects and the importance of having goals.
Talking to students his own age was a daunting task, but a challenge he was happy to take on.
“You just have to make sure you are fully prepared and that you know your topic,” he said.
His record attempt began on September 1, seeing him leave from Sunshine Coast Airport.
Taking on the record was “the next big thing” for Liam, who developed an interest in flying when he was 13 years old and got his licence five weeks after his 15th birthday.
Liam said his family was “very supportive” of his ambitious plans, although of course scared to send him on his way to tour the country on his own.
“It does pose a lot of challenges that you wouldn’t traditionally find with a 16 year old,” he said.
“They were willing to work towards that [goal] and we eventually got there in the end.”
His school was also supportive and accommodating while he made his record attempt, moving his assessments to a later date.
Liam said the biggest challenges of his journey were finding fuel in the outback, organising accommodation in over 30 locations and being prepared for any kind of weather conditions.
The teenager arrived back on the Sunshine Coast on Monday afternoon, concluding his record attempt.
