The Sunrise personality was in Bathurst for the annual BizMonth Business Lunch, where he appeared as the keynote speaker.
Koch is more than just a television presenter, being someone who has an extensive knowledge of business and finance.
He often speaks at events, covering topics such as success in small business, technology in business and investment.
His address on Wednesday put a great deal of emphasis on the ways businesses can succeed by embracing technology, the internet and social media.
Koch presented the crowd with case studies and examples of Australian businesses that were doing well by utilising online promotional tools.
“It all comes back to you to be an early adapter, to be inspired by this, to be the Kayla Itsines or the Birdsnest,” he said.
The audience was given the opportunity to ask questions at the end of his address, which ranged from getting clients to see the benefits of new technology, to cryptocurrency.
Speaking to the Western Advocate after his address, Koch said that regional businesses had more access than ever before to the tools that can help them grow.
“Accessibility has never been easier. It is you making the time to do it, that is the issue,” he said.
“If me coming here can encourage people to take the time to access that information, and give them some ideas or direction on what’s available, then I think that is really important.”
He said he really wanted businesses to take away two simple messages from his presentation.
“Don’t be afraid of change, embrace it and become of a student of it, because change is here to stay and you’ve got to see it as an exciting opportunity rather than a scary threat,” he said.
“Also, to look after yourself as a business owner. Spend time on your own professional development, health, education, it is really important, because a business owner drives everything in a business.
“You’ve got to be top of your game all the time.”
How to make your business stand out in a crowd, according to David Koch:
- Observe other businesses.
- Find gaps in the market.
- Recruit different skills in your business.
- Monitor feedback from clients/customers
- Don’t get comfortable.
Mayor Graeme Hanger said Bathurst Regional Council was proud to have Koch appear at the business lunch, and felt that the audience got a lot of useful information from his address.
“This is probably the most successful one we’ve had, a good crowd of about 230 people who had an outstanding speaker with a good message and a passionate message,” he said.
He thanked the sponsors that made the lunch possible and said the lunch will return in 2019.
