This year the celebration of Brody’s first year in remission will do the same.
Six-year-old Brody is one of the faces of this year’s Great Cycle Challenge that raises funds for the ground-breaking research into childhood cancer being done at Children’s Medical Research Institute.
When the team at Great Cycle Challenge asked Brody’s mum, Stacey, if he would be involved again this year, she said they were even more keen than ever.
“To know that people still respond to his story is quite humbling,’’ Stacey said.
“There are no words to describe the gratitude, knowing that people are riding just for Brody.
“I feel so touched that he’s had that effect on people. We’d had emails from people, presents in the mail. I can’t thank them enough.’’
Brody was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma two years ago after being sent for blood tests and a bone biopsy when a broken arm did not heal properly.
He was sent straight to Sydney for surgery and months of chemotherapy.
During last year’s Great Cycle Challenge, riders fell in love with the mad Batman fan with the big smile.
This year’s Hero Jersey, for those who raise more than $2500, will carry a Batman theme in honour of Brody.
Stacey said while Brody was doing well, life after cancer was still a challenge.
“He’s had a lot of hospital visits. His immune system is shot from the chemo, so he’ll never be normal in that way,’’ she said.
“His arm is healing well, but he’ll need physiotherapy until he’s an adult. He started school this year and he’s doing well, but the chemo has impacted his motor skills. There are so many things you just don’t realise.’’
Despite it all, they are grateful.

“The Great Cycle Challenge is for every kid with cancer, so that they can all have the same chance that Brody has had,’’ Stacey said.
“It’s so important that we all do what we can.’’
The Great Cycle Challenge is now one of the biggest cycling events across Australia where people get on their bike over the month of October, ride and ask for sponsors.
There’s no minimum goal: it’s your challenge. Your goal could be as simple as riding around the block every afternoon.
