The six-year-old Murtajill x She’s A Mountain gelding backed up his victory in the Young Picnic Cup when saluting in the Benchmark 58 Handicap (1,400 metres) at Monday’s Racing Orange meeting.
It was his sixth career win from 38 starts and the run he produced as a $20 outsider was one of Attilius’ best.
With Ken Dunbar in the saddle the Bathurst grey began well, but settled some 5½ lengths off the pace. With 400m to travel he was in sixth.
Dunbar guided Attilius five wide through the final bend and while he made up ground, did not look as if he’d snatch the win.
However, Theobald’s runner kept coming and in his final strides nosed ahead. He won by a long head over Griffin’s Gaze ($6.50) with $3.60 favourite Adaboycharlie just a half-head back in third.
