He’s conquered the best spellers in the region and now Perthville Public School pupil Angus Mills is set to take on NSW’s best in next month’s Premier’s Spelling Bee.

The year six student will compete in the senior finals, alongside more than 100 other regional finalists, on November 2.
To qualify for the state final, Angus had to overcome his school, zone and then region.

Other qualifiers had to spell words like besotted, expostulate, hereditary and subservient.
However, his most challenging word in the previous round of competition was contemporaneous.
“I was almost stumped on that one. I thought it was ‘ious’, but I went with ‘eous’,” he said.
“I read a lot of books before I go to bed. Information books really help with unusual words.
“My mum thinks I’ve got a photographic memory when it comes to words.”
Angus is now in the top 2.5 per cent of regional finalists and in the top 0.06 per cent of all competition entrants.
Now in its 15th year, the 2018 Spelling Bee has seen a record participation of 170,000 students from almost 1000 public schools in NSW.
That’s an increase of 20,000 students and 120 schools on the 2017 challenge.
