Heading into the two-day event, Lifeline had 24,000 books from a variety of genres that were ready to be sold.
Bathurst Showground was abuzz with activity on Saturday as patrons came to support the cause and get a look at the range before it started to diminish, and crowds were also strong on Sunday.
Lifeline Central West’s executive director Alex Ferguson said he was pleased to see people of all ages attending their fair and buying books.
“It’s the usual potpourri of people from the youngest of the young … and right through to the senior people,” he said.
“The folk law that everyone is doing electronic reading is just a myth.”
The amount raised was more than he had expected and he was amazed by the overwhelming community support.
“That is an incredible amount of money for two days with second-hand books,” he said.
The book fair serves as a major fundraiser for Lifeline, with money from entry and book sales going to support the organisation’s telephone service.
Mr Ferguson said that, without the telephone service, there would be a number of people in the region who might never get the help they needed.
“Lifeline Central West would save a life every day of the week through the telephone service through intervention,” he said.
