Up until Thursday, Parade had assumed the only link was that the NRMA has staff and customers in Bathurst.
And when the renovations to the NRMA Bathurst Panorama Holiday Park were unveiled on Tuesday, people were told the city’s location and motoring history made the investment a natural fit.
However, Parade now knows, thanks to a local informant, that there was another link to Bathurst that hadn’t really been considered.
It turns out the editor of the Open Road magazine, a NRMA publication, was a man named Cecil Albert Gregory, who was born in Forbes but educated in Bathurst.
He was at the helm of Open Road from 1927 to 1932, and prior to that had worked as a cub reporter at the Bathurst Times and in multiple roles at the Daily Telegraph.
Over his career he produced a number of map-related publications, including an Australian school atlas, street directories, a road guide to New South Wales and a fishing and camping directory.
Parade was also informed that Gregory still has family in Bathurst to this day.

CAN’T MAKE UP FOR UNSAFE DRIVING
WHEN it comes to driving around Bathurst, Parade generally feels quite safe.
However, she was left feeling uneasy after witnessing another motorist’s bad driving behaviour.
As she was coming out of a roundabout, Parade noticed a woman approaching from the other side, who was applying makeup as she drove along.
This is something you see in movies, but rarely encounter in real life, and Parade was appalled by what she was seeing.
She would like to issue a reminder that picture-perfect blush or foundation might look great in any other situation, but it won’t matter for even a second if an accident should occur on the road because of it.
It shouldn’t need to be said, but please don’t apply makeup while you’re behind the wheel.
It not only puts yourself at risk, but other motorists and pedestrians too.
