It is understood the fan yelled out a racist taunt to Young, who is of a Sri Lankan and Scottish descent, and the goalkeeper’s response was heard during the telecast of the match.

The individual was immediately identified, resulting in eviction from the grounds.

The Western Sydney fan now faces possible punishment by Football Federation Australia, and is likely to be put through the FFA’s banning process.

The Wanderers released a statement describing the behaviour as ‘deplorable’ and added the fan would not be allowed back at any of the club’s fixtures.

The matter is also being investigated by the game’s governing body while some high-profile people within the football community have given their thoughts on the matter.

Former Socceroos Archie Thompson and Mark Bosnich have called for a lengthy ban.

"There's no room for that in life full stop. He should be banned for 10 years,” former goalkeeper Bosnich said on Fox Sports.

Striker Thompson called for an even tougher punishment.

" I think not 10 years, life. We can't tolerate that sort of stuff," he said on the same program.

The Wanderers stated they condemned the incident in the ‘strongest possible manner’ in the statement.

“This behaviour is deplorable and not acceptable at any Wanderers event, just like it should not be accepted anywhere in society,” the statement read.

“The Western Sydney Wanderers would like to extend a sincere apology to Jamie Young for being subjected to such behaviour.

“We applaud and are extremely proud of those Wanderers supporters in the immediate vicinity to this individual who promptly, and vociferously, objected to the behaviour demonstrated and alerted authorities to have the offender removed from the venue.

“This individual is not to be welcomed back to any Wanderers fixture.”

There was more than 5000 people at the ground for the match, which finished 2-all.
