Punters were backing a two-dog battle between Morning Tide ($2.40) and Zipping Romeo ($1.90 favourite) in the Ladbrokes Greyhound Previews Maiden (450 metres) and that’s exactly what they got.
Owner Ginn watched Morning Tide start well from the widest box and come across to lead just ahead of Zipping Romeo on the opening bend.
Morning Tide cut across Zipping Romeo on the back straight but the latter held his stride to stay in reach of the leader.
Zipping Romeo brought the margin back to a length on the turn for home, holding a comfortable three length break back to eventual third place finisher My Mate Pikey ($8).
Morning Tide wasn’t going to be hunted down and extended her margin out to two lengths at the winning post. The winning time was 26.18 seconds.
“We didn’t give her a stir up today. She’s looking for a bit more distance. That was her first start over the 450m and she came out good so we’ll keep her at this distance and see how she goes,” Ginn said.
“There’s been a bit of work to get her to where she is. She’ll get up to the 500m easily. It’s all about keeping them at a distance before they get comfortable enough to step up.”
Prior to Morning Tide’s win Kennerson Park was treated to a stellar run for rising star Caviar Quality, who made it three victories from three races to start her career.
