Crime Prevention Officer with Chifley Police District, Sen Const Sue Rose, said police do recover stolen jewellery in search warrants from time to time, and are always very keen to return the items to their owners.
She said often the jewellery has a higher sentimental then commercial value, and there are things people can do to protect their property, and held police get it back to them, should it ever be stolen
Sen Const Rose said engraving jewellery, or any valuable, is very useful in assisting police.
With jewellery, it can help the owner identify the piece to police, and with other valuables, for example, cameras, laptops and other items of value engraving your driver’s licence and state you live in means if your property is recovered by police they have a far better chance of tracking you down.
Sen Const Rose also recommended people take clear, close up photos of their jewellery, for safe keeping.
“A clear photo is one of the best ways for us to identify someone as the rightful owner,” she said.
And if you’re going to be away from home for a period of time, Sen Const Rose encouraged people to ensure their home security is adequate.
She said this is important with the Christmas holidays approaching, when people are often away from them residence for longer periods of time.
“If you have valuable or sentimental jewellery make sure its hidden somewhere safe.
“Consider getting a small safe in your house and bolt it to the floor,” she said.
While police were able to return the recovered jewellery on this occasion, sadly this is not always the outcome.
Property which police cannot find an owner for is held at the station while police try and find the owner, but after a period of time the property is sent to Sydney for auction.
