THE kids at Goodstart Kelso were were left heartbroken last week after someone stole their four pet chickens, but this week they are all smiles, after the community rallied to replace the pets.

Monique Meekin, an early childhood educator, said both the staff and children of Goodstart were shocked and saddened when they realised all four pet chickens were missing last week.
An appeal to get the pets back was unsuccessful, but after the community heard of the children’s plight, people stepped up and offered to replace the chickens.
Ms Meekin said the offers to donate new chickens for the children were overwhelming.
“We’ve had lots and lots of people come forward and offer to help,” she said.
“Students from All Saints’ College gave us two chickens, and we have another lady giving us another two this week,” she said.
“It really is amazing.”
Ms Meekin said when people heard someone had stolen Hokey and Pokey, along with another two un-named silkies from their coop at Goodstart Kelso, people were outraged.
“People were upset for the kids, because they absolutely loved those chickens,” she said.
Now they have new ones, Ms Meekin said the children have been busy tending to them, collecting scraps for them and hand feeding them.
She said she wanted to thank All Saints’ and Christine for organising new chickens for the children, as well as every who offered their help.
“I had a lady from Bathurst Real Estate offer to replace them, I had people in boxing me over Facebook and calling the centre, which was lovely,” she said.
“We feel very grateful [so many people care],” she said.
