The Bathurst Memorial Entertainment Centre [BMEC] unveiled its annual season for 2019 last night, which will bring a total of 18 unique productions to the city for the venue’s 20th anniversary.
These productions will be brought to Bathurst by a range of revered local, national and international performance companies.
“We always try to challenge and intrigue our audiences by bringing them things they haven’t seen before,” BMEC centre manager Stephen Champion said.
“Through drama, music, dance and circus, the season will cover the tastes of much of the community.”
The 2019 season will see a significant presence of theatre catering for young people, evidenced in productions such as The Young King, Hitler’s Daughter and Me and My Shadow.
“The best theatre for young people is totally appropriate for adult audiences as well,” Mr Champion said.
“The Young King, an adaptation of the Oscar Wilde story, will explore how power can change a person, and is a moving piece of theatre.”
”Me and My Shadow is a visual poem about a young woman and her shadow, and is a beautiful combination of light and visuals.”
”Hitler’s Daughter, based on the Jackie French novel, has us imagining if Adolf Hitler had a deformed daughter, and is perfect for adult audiences as well as young teenagers.”
Another notable highlight of the 2019 season is Mighty, a physical theatre, dance and circus extravaganza that has been produced locally by Lingua Franca and BMEC’s Local Stages.
We always try to challenge and intrigue our audiences.
- Stephen Champion
“Mighty is a work that explores the link between fragility and strength, and we’re really proud to include a Lingua Franca work for the second time in our annual season,” Mr Champion said.
With the 20 year anniversary looming for BMEC in its current form, Mr Champion says the growth of the venue’s roster has been amazing.
“20 years ago, there was a single season comprising five shows, that was it,” he said.
“We now have an 18-show season, as well as Local Stages, Catapult Festival, Inland Sea of Sound and the Bathurst Writers’ and Readers’ Festival.”
