CSU’s women’s side recovered from a three point deficit at the break in their Active Axons Blue Mountains and Greater West Rugby Sevens Carnival plate playoff to run away from opponents Central Coast over the second half – the second time they had done so at the tournament.
Saturday’s tournament saw both the CSU Mitchell men’s and women’s teams go through their pool stages unbeaten, although the former squad were unlucky to miss out on a finals shot against a stacked field.
The women’s side breezed through their opening pool clashes against Briars and How I Tackled Your Mother before winning a tougher matchup with the Central Coast women.
CSU’s men’s team finished top of their pool thanks to wins against Winmalee and Stannies Old Boys in an all-Bathurst affair.
The women’s semi-finals featured an all-CSU game between the Reddies and the Mitchell ladies. Reddies progressed to the cup final where they lost to the Seven 10s.

Claire Woolmington was named player of the game in the plate final.
“They were pretty tough competition, Central Coast, but we managed to pull together, have a bit of fun and get the win,” Woolmington said.
“Our crossover game was against the other CSU team, Reddies, and they managed to get the upper hand on us. They came out strongly and it was good to see the other CSU team doing so well.
“Was sad that we had to play off against each other for a spot in the final.
“We were down 10-7 at half-time against Central Coast but we ended up scoring three tries after that and ended up being a good win. Our last try pretty much sealed the win for us close to full-time.”
It was still a great result for the Mitchell women’s team who were backing up from their recent finals appearance at the Wagga Sevens.
The tournament wraps up CSU’s 15-a-side and sevens commitments for 2018 until their New Holland Agriculture Cup (men) and Westfund Ferguson Cup (women) pre-seasons begin.
