SATURDAY BOWLS
SATURDAY saw 24 players involved in four games of pairs and the final of the Club Fours Championship.
In the Fours final the team of Robert Lindsay, Bryan Bromfield, Geoffrey Thorne and Ross James were playing to win their 6th consecutive Fours Championship.
Their opposition was the formidable team of Ray Fitzallen, Peter Wibberley, John Archer and skip Phil Gray.
The defending champions scored a single on the first end but unfortunately that would be the only time they led in the game.
Five shots on end two gave Gray’s quartet the lead and the champs did not recover.
Team Gray led 9-6 after seven ends, 21-8 after 14 ends and were in front 27-12 when the game was declared after 20 ends. The ends went to Team Gray 12 to eight. Congratulations to our newly crowned champions.
Although beaten on the day Bobby, Bryan, Geoffrey and Ross have set a record that will take some beating. Maybe the new champs can match it. They played awesome bowls in the final – well done.
Social Pairs Game 1
Good to see Ian Schofield back playing with his old mate John Fulton. They played Arthur Williams and Jim Gives.
Williams and Grives 23 Defeated Fulton and Schofield 19. Arthur and Jim led 10-4 after seven ends and 17-12 after 14 ends. Ian and John won ends 17, 18 and 19 to trail 19-20.
But… the Grives duo won the last two ends to seal victory. Ends to the winners 12 to nine.
Social Pairs Game 2
Arch Ledger and Gary Hotham 20 defeated Phillip Murray and Mick Sewell 14. Mick and Phillip led 7-4 after seven ends and 12-9 after 14 ends.
Arch and Gary finished with a wet sail winning 5 of the next 6 ends and were leading 20-14 when the game was called on the 20th end. Team Hotham took the ends 11-9.
Social Pairs Game 3
Paul Rodenhuis and Norm Hayes 21 defeated Bruce Rich and Paul (Awesome) Reece15. Bruce and Paul won five of the first seven ends to lead 6-5.
They also led 13-8 after 14 ends and seemed headed for victory but Paul and Norm had other ideas and won 6 of the last seven ends to claim a good win.
I think skipper has lifted the ban on Thorney as he searches for a successful skip. Ends went to Paul and Norm 11-10.
Social Pairs Game 4
Bob Foster and Denis Oxley 21 defeated on Cambey and Hans Hummelshot 16. Bob and Denis led 8-4 after seven ends and 13-11 after 14 ends.
Although Ron and Hans won three of the last four ends they could not make up the leeway. Ends went to Ron and Hans 12-9.
JUNIOR BOWLS
A SMALL, but enthusiastic group of juniors attended our Saturday morning, Bathurst Real Estate Development Squad activities.
Bowlers were put through some drills to allow coaches to check techniques and make any necessary adjustments.
The session finished off with two games of singles where Brody Carter got over Clara Bromfield and Guy Lore and new recruit Blake had an epic battle. A reminder that there will be no Junior Bowls this Saturday due to the Carillon tournament.

MAJELLAN MEN’S BOWLING CLUB
On Saturday, November 24 the finals of both the mixed pairs and mixed fours were played along with social bowls with the results being as follows. The mixed pairs was contested by Mel Parker and Craig Bush, who played against Anne and Tim Pickstone.
The same started, with both sides going shot for shot until the 9th end, when Mel and Craig scored a six, followed by a three. Anne and Tim battled on bravely from there, but could not make up those nine shots with Mel and Craig running out the winners. Congratulations to them and commiserations to Anne and Tim.
In the mixed fours, Beryl Flanagan, Cindy McGrath, Tony and Glen Urza played against Leonie and Ron McGarry, Marlene Naylor and Tiger Smith.
The scores for the first five ends were even but with Tiger’s side only winning two of the next eleven ends, Glen’s side skipped away to a handy lead, as hard as Tiger’s side tried, they were unable to pull back Glen’s lead with Glen’s side running out comfortable winners and commiserations to the losers.
In the social bowls, a game of pairs was played, Trevor Sharpham and Max Elms versus Terry Clark and Hugh Brennan. This game see-sawed from one side to the other until the twelfth end when Trevor and Max took control and scored a good win.
In the other social game, Darrel Shirmer, Ray Minogue, and John Hobson played against George Ballard, Tony Press and Ken Hartwig.
This game was also an even contest until the thirteenth end when John’s side scored a four followed by a couple of twos. This gave them a winning break which they held on to, running out the winners.
Sunday the twenty-fifth the club had a visit from our good friend the Walleragang Bowling Club whose ambition was to win back the Wallerawang Shield, which the two club’s play for every year.
After a hello and a couple of welcome drinks, the ladies and men’s side were sent out to do battle. The six rinks were fiercely contested until lunch was called, with both sides being in a winning position. After a nice lunch and a couple of soft drinks, both clubs went out to continue the tussle.
The afternoon games were again very close, but in the end, after some good bowls and a lot of luck, the Majellan hung on to keep the shield.
We would like to thank the Wallerawang ladies and men for the sportsmanship and friendship they displayed, making it a great day for everyone, and the Jelly is looking forward to returning the visit in the New Year.
The club would also like to thank all the volunteers who helped to make the day a great success.
Tuesday bowls saw a game of triples played between Kevin Howard, Paul Kennedy and Mick McDonald, against Terry Clark, Tim Pickstone, and John Hobson.
This was a close tussle until the fourteenth end, where Mick got a winning break which he kept to the end, winning a close game and being the rink winners for the day.
A game of pairs was also played where Peter Zylstra and Alan Clark played against a couple of old mates in Gus Thurgood and Gary Cameron. This also was a close game with both sides going end for end with Peter and Alan eventually winning by a couple of shots.
