Kelso High School’s team of TJ Henderson, Caitlin Morris, Ray Cross and Michaela Doungmanee were successful in the Western Region Grand Final against Dubbo College, Delroy Campus last week, and are now placed in the top 10 schools across the state.
Over 400 schools competed in the debating competition, with the Kelso High Year 8 team so far undefeated.
The team have competed in six debates against schools across the region, including Bathurst High, Delroy Campus and Lithgow High School arguing topics including ‘should home work be scrapped?’ and ‘should all sports involving animals be banned?’.
Kelso High English teacher and debating coach Adria Hertel, said she was incredibly proud of the students, who she said had the ability to take out the title.
Ms Hertel said the group had taken on feedback from the adjudicators during the competition and used it to continually improve their skills.

She said the school had a fine history in debating success, and was confident the Year 8 team would do well.
Ms Hertel said the student’s success in debating was just one example of a very talented cohort.
“In the last three weeks these students have been involved with the SRC, the school musical, sporting events and the Carillon Junior Theatrical Society.”
The competition gets underway in Sydney on Wednesday.
