Fire and Rescue NSW station officer Doug Fisk said emergency crews were called to the scene about 1.30pm.
Station officer Fisk said a gas main running along the footpath was ruptured after it was clipped by workers.
When fire crews arrived the centre, including all shops and the medical centre upstairs, had already self-evacuated.
“Everyone did a good job of evacuating. Police closed the road and we dispersed the gas with a line of hose,” he said.
Police also attended the scene to take over the evacuation and road closure while a crew from the gas supplier shut off supply.
Station officer Fisk said once the gas was dispersed, fire crews checked the shops as a precautionary measure. Tuesday’s breezy conditions helped disperse the gas.
