The orphanage, which was a facility that took girls only, operated for more than 100 years before its closure in 1975. 

The Care Leavers Australia Network (CLAN) would like to find out more about the orphanage, as there is very little information available, and is looking for former residents or their descendants to share anything they have.

"We've got only one book on the St Joseph's Orphanage, and that's by the Sisters of Mercy, 'A Piece of the Story', and all it's got is two pages on it," CLAN founder Leonie Sheedy said. 

Anyone who has any information they can share about St Joseph's Orphanage is asked to call CLAN on 1800 008 774.

Although appealing for information on that particular orphanage, Ms Sheedy said CLAN was always looking to find out more about any orphanage in Australia. 

The group was founded in 2000 by Ms Sheedy and Joanna Penglase, who wanted to create a support system for anyone brought up in 'care', with CLAN providing support, advocacy, research and training for people from this background.

CLAN has also helped people connect with long-lost family members. 

Ms Sheedy herself spent 13 years in an orphanage in Geelong and knows the value of a group like this. 

"CLAN was established by care leavers and is run by care leavers," she said. 

She feels that a group run in this way can offer the most help, as people share similar life experiences and can put each other at ease. 

People who grew up in care are can become members for $10 a year, which ensures they receive a newsletter monthly and can access CLAN's support services.

"People say CLAN is like a family for them," Ms Sheedy said. 

"People tell us the newsletter they get is the only mail they get that's not a bill."
