Mr Jones is one of four counsellors now working across the central NSW region under the federal government’s Rural Finance Counselling Service.
CEO Jeff Caldbeck said the new counsellors had been funded through further drought measures put in place by the federal government to support farmers.
Mr Jones’ family has been farming at Bathurst for around 50 years and while his career has found him living in Sydney and abroad, he has always considered the family farm to be home.
Following 30 years in the corporate world, Mr Jones and his wife returned home to Bathurst to take over the family farm from his elderly parents.
In 2014 he completed his Agricultural Cert IV and has spent the last few years rebuilding the farm and drought-proofing during an unprecedented dry period.
Mr Jones found this process challenging and, even with his father’s guidance, the realisation of how difficult it is to make the farm productive really hit home.
He has found that his business skills have been fundamental in planning and managing, but recognises that the best laid plans are only as good as the reality the conditions allow.
As Bathurst RFC, he will help eligible clients better understand their financial position by providing a range of services.
These include access to financial information and options, empowering clients to make their own decisions on how to effectively manage change and adjustment along with providing referrals to other service providers.
