The announcement of funding is the first major election promise from Mr Jennings, who confirmed this week that he would be the Labor candidate for the 2019 federal election.

“Labor has committed, if it wins the next election, $24,520,000 just for public schools in Calare,” he said.

“That's additional funding and it's over three years, so the funding for this would start to flow on January 1, 2020.

“It's obviously the full Gonski funding, that is reversing the cuts that the coalition put in place in the last five years.”

Of the funding, $5,770,000 would go to 16 schools that fall under the 2795 postcode.

It’s the second highest amount behind the 2800 postcode (Orange), where 16 schools would share in $6,290,000.

Mr Jennings said that what he was most proud of was that the funding would increase fairness and reduce the inequality between country and metropolitan students.

“Country schools need stronger funding in order to be able to have the students access the equivalence of services,” he said.

Each school would get a different amount, which Mr Jennings said would have been determined by the size of the school and the needs of its students. 

“For any kids that have any learning issue needs, this is what this money can be spent on and it’s needs-based to the students, so schools can tailor their educational needs packages to what a student requires,” he said.

Mr Jennings added that the extra funding would ensure that every student in Australia had better access to education, regardless of location or socioeconomic status. 

Nation-wide, Labor would be putting $14 billion of additional funding into public schools.

Every child would receive 15 years of quality schooling from three and four-year preschool to Year 12, which would ideally be followed by “excellent” TAFE and university opportunities.
