Now sitting in the back room of the museum is the 1998 Ford EL Falcon that was driven by Alan Jones, who was the 1980 Formula One world champion.
The car was built for the Longhurst Racing team to debut in the 1998 V8 Supercars season and was driven by Jones throughout the year.
It raced at Bathurst on a number of occasions, but didn’t record a finish in the Great Race until 2000, and even then it was 28th place.
NMRM manager Brad Owen said the car was offered to the museum to be put on display by the current owner, Mark Le Vaillant.
“The owner was here for Challenge Bathurst and a friend of his convinced him to bring it up and put it on display,” he said.
The museum relies a lot on owners of cars like this for its exhibition, as the museum has just 17 cars and five bikes in its permanent collection.
Those vehicles make up only a small portion of the 115 currently at the museum.
Mr Owen said the museum is aiming to have two major exhibitions a year, so people should take some time to visit the museum as the cars on display do change.
The NMRM will be closed on January 1, but otherwise open during normal hours.
