It was a telling moment for the talented striker as Lamberton’s effort sparked an impressive come from behind 3-2 win for Sydney FC in its National Youth League match against the Newcastle Jets.
Making his fourth starting appearance for the youth side, Lamberton and his team-mates found themselves trailing 2-1 in sapping, hot conditions at Lambert Park.
Needing the win to keep its Group B premiership hopes alive, Sydney FC piled on the pressure in the second half. When the ball went out for a corner, they turned to a set play.
The ball was played short to Harry Van Der Saag, who then swung it to the back post where Lamberton was waiting.
“When it comes to headers, it kind of just hits me then I hope for the best. I do everything right, I get in the right position, the right shape and then it’s like I just blank out until it hits the net,” he said.
“It's a bit of a moment of panic until it actually hits the goal.

“In the moment I knew that the ball always goes to the back post, so I thought ‘I’ll just hang around here’. Their defence didn’t really track me after we played the ball and it smacked me right in the head.
“It’s something we work on at training a lot, it’s a nominal set piece for us and it worked out really well.”

Lamberton’s goal came in the 64th minute, locking things up at 2-all and lifting his team-mates. The win was sealed in the 89th when Van Der Saag scored his second of the match.
The result moved Sydney FC within three points of the Group B leaders Western Sydney Wanderers, though Lamberton’s side does have a game in hand.
“In the first half we made a really good start and we scored relatively early, but then we kind of just lost control of the game. We were playing a bit more on the counter-attack,” Lamberton said.
“But for the second half our coach calmed us all down, obviously he knew we had it in us to do it, and the second half was a different game. We were a lot more in control, more organised and when that goal came, we were all that bloody pumped to get the next one.
“We knew we needed to win that game to keep in title contention as well, it was one we definitely had to win. But we were all that bloody motivated after that goal, we wanted to go all the way and get the next one, which we did.
“That was such an important win for us, but we need to keep going. A good result this weekend for us could have that first place on the ladder on the place secured.”

Lamberton, who now has two Y-League goals, hopes he will again get the nod to start in this Saturday’s match against Canberra United.
But even if he misses out, he knows he has become a better footballer this season simply by working with the Sydney FC Y-League squad.
The constant competition for starting spots drives him to improve.
“I’m absolutely loving the chances I am getting, loving the level,” he said. “It’s a very competitive team, we’ve got a lot of players they can draw on, but it’s a good indication that you not only have to play really well to keep your spot, but also train really well.”
