The figure was achieved by 3pm on Wednesday, with time still remaining for people to visit.
This was the third consecutive year Bathurst had participated in the global day, which aims to raise awareness of the regional museums and galleries.
Bathurst Regional Council’s museums manager Janelle Middleton said that there were a lot of return visitors, as well as some who had never been before.
Ms Middleton said it was good to see the day was growing in popularity.
“We don’t necessarily change it in any way. The formula we use just seems to work,” she said.
In addition to visiting the facilities, people were also encouraged to take selfies while they were there and post them to social media using #MuseumSelfieBathurst.
Ms Middleton said people always came up with something creative, while audience engagement officer Penny Packham said the photos were a sign of people having fun.
“It is great to see people really enjoying their museums,” Ms Packham said.
Visitors to the museums were survey, which will provide council with more data about the success of the day.
