Because of the extreme heat no bowls were played on Wednesday.  A few guys had an afternoon of cards playing five Clowns.

It was a great afternoon of fun and friendship, but we all need practice to beat the guru Ian Cunningham.

Friday’s bowls started at 1000 to try and avoid the heat. Ten bowlers played one game of triples and one game of pairs.

Game one

Arch Ledger, Kevin Miller and Ray Noonan 27 defeated Jim Box, Bob Heffernan and Jim Grives 11. 

Team Noonan led all the way on this game.  9-3 after six ends and 12-6 after 12 ends. 

Team Grives fought back to trail 11-12 after 14 ends. Arch, Kevin and Ray went on a four end scoring spree to score 15 shots to zero and score a convincing win. 

Ends top the winners 11-7.

Game two

Denis Oxley and Ross James 27 defeated John Archer and Jack Smith nine. Denis and Ross led from the first end and were never headed. 

They led 9-1 after seven ends and 20-6 after 14 ends and ran out easy winners in an awesome display of bowls. 

Ends were 15-6 to the winners.

Saturday saw 20 bowlers play five games of pairs.

Game one

John Fulton and Jim Grives 19 defeated Barry McPherson and Bryan Bromfield 16.  John and Jim scored single shots on the first 3 ends to gain the early lead. 

Barry and Bryan scored 12 shots over the next five ends to lead 12-3 after eight ends. 

John and Jim rallied to win four straight ends and draw level 12-12 on the 12th end. John and Jim took the lead 17-15 after 18 ends to win a good close game of bowls. 

Ends to the winners 13-8.

Game two

Bruce Rich and Ray Noonan 19 defeated John McDonaugh and Ron Cambey 11. Scores were level 7-7 after eight ends and 9-9 after 12 ends. 

Bruce and Ray won seven of the nine ends to close John and Ron out of the game and record a very strong win. 

Ends to the winners 13-8.

Game three

Bob Heffernan and Bob Lindsay 24 defeated Phillip Murray and Gary Hotham 13. The two Bobs started strongly winning six of the first seven ends to win 11-1. 

B1 and B2 then won seven of the next 8 ends to lead convincingly 23-3 after 15 ends. 

Phil and Gary won five of the last six ends to make the score more respectable but they had given the two Bobs too much of a head start. 

Ends to the winners 14-7.

Game four

Ron Hollebone and Hans Hummelshoj 21 defeated Kevin Miller and Paul Reece. Kevin and Paul led 6-4 after five ends but Ron and Hans won the next seven ends to lead 17-6 after 12 ends. 

The last 9 ends were all singles with Ron and Hans winning a game was much closer than the scores suggest. 

Ends to the winners 13-8.

Game five

Arch Ledger and Ian Schofield 33 defeated Grant Brunton and Denis Oxley nine. Arch and Ian combined very well to score a convincing win. 

Scores were 1-1 after two ends but that was as close as Grant and Denis would get. Arch and Ian led 10-4 after seven ends and 20-8 after 14 ends. 

The game was called after 20 ends with Arch and Ian winning the ends 12-8.

This week at the Majellan Bowling Club the first game of the Club Championships took place alongside the social games on Saturday.

But before we get to that lets look how Tuesday, January 15 Social games played out.

Rink two

Ian Warren, Terry Bourke and Tim Pickstone were consistent from the start opening the first two ends with a 6-0 score.

Peter Zylstra, John Bossom and Alan Clark could not get the points they needed in the end and went down 20-15 in the end.

Rink four

George Ballard and Tony Hogan had to battle from the start with Mick Simmons and Dennis Oxley.

The first three ends going Team Oxley’s way with a healthy start of 8-0 after four ends.

It was then that Team Hogan fired on all cylinders to claw their way back to be nine all after nine ends.

After scoring another five points in the last two ends Team Hogan prevailed 15-12.

Rink four

Dick Graham, Paul Kennedy and Peter Naylor had a battle on their hands against Terry Clark, Kevin Howard and John Hobson.

With unswerving persistence Team Naylor drew the score after ends four and 12, with the scores 12 apiece.

Team Naylor then picked up four points after 13 and didn’t look back, with the final result 22-15.

On Saturday, January 19 as stated before the first of the Championship games took place alongside the social bowlers.

On a day that was friendlier with the temperature than the rest of the week, this is how it all played out.

Rink eight

Terry Clark, Trevor Sharpham and Noel Whitney didn’t have the perfect start against Kevin Howard, Peter Zylstra and Tony Urza, as they struggled to get points to begin with but after eight ends were level seven all. 

Team Urza took charge after this and were 14-12 up after 14 ends.

This however was the last time Team Urza put any more points on the board, with Team Whitney scoring the last 7 ends to finish up 26-14.

Rink nine

Alan Clarke and Tim Pickstone showed Ken Hartwig and Mick Simmons how it is done with an impressive win.

From the start Team Pickstone scored well with a 13-2 lead after eight. Team Simmons had a short fightback with a six point end on nine.

Team Pickstone proved that constant scoring was the way to win with a final score of 30-13.

Rink 13

Rink runners up George Ballard, Josh Roberson and Peter Naylor in another brilliant display, showed Dick Graham, Andrew Moffat and John Hobson how it is done.

From the onset Team Naylor pushed the distance between the scores with an impressive 14-6 lead after ten.

It was though after end 15 Team Naylor really pushed the score board with 18-2 points over seven ends, to finish up 35-12.

Rink 14

Glen Gillon (swing bowler), Peter Drew and Gary Cameron just fell short against Glen Gillon, Trev Pallister and Rhys Harvey.

This was a tightly fought match with the lead going from one team to the next several times throughout.

Team Harvey eventually proving they had the game in hand with a close 23-20 win.

Rink 11

The final match for the day was the Club Championship, Men’s Fours game, and they were the rink winner on rink 11.

Pat Hogan, Gus Thurgood, Ron McGarry and Tiger Smith had an uphill battle against Tony Hogan, Kerry Connors, Tony McNamara and Mick McDonald.

Team McDonald opening the scoring with four points, and scores being level after five ends at six all, it looked like this was going to be close, however, after the 12th end Team McDonald picked up 22 points in the final six ends to come out winners 35-15.

Just a reminder that this Saturday, 26 January there is a mixed social day planned, and with quite a few names already on the board, looks like this will be a great day.
