The offer commenced at 11am and only an hour later the indoor and outdoor pools were becoming a sea of people.
From young kids to teenagers, adults to grandparents, every section of the community was represented.
To add to the fun, the crowds were provided with inflatable rafts, rings and balls to play with while in the water.
There was also a movie playing outdoors on a big screen, with shade tents erected around it for people to watch from.
As was the running theme for Australia Day, a barbecue was fired up outside.
Deputy mayor Bobby Bourke said the fact that there was a crowd so early in the morning was a sign that it would end up being a very popular Australia Day activity for residents.
He said there was always more that could be done to enhance Australia Day, but he was pleased to see the aquatic centre involved again.
“It is good to get one of our facilities [involved], especially a place where people can cool down and have some activities,” he said.
